New Tarot deck - English Magic Tarot

Now, I'm the first to say that I love the Radiant Rider Waite deck and it is hands down my favourite deck to work with but once in a while I'm tempted by something else that looks intriguing. It also deepens your practice to investigate new images of familiar cards and the writer's own translation and understanding of the cards.

First Impressions

The title caught my eye. Traditional tarot decks are based upon Italian Tarocchi and this deck, while still imaging historical dress, references English fashions and characters. John Dee, King Henry VIII, Sir Isaac Newton and more appear in the images and stonehenge and the Tower of London give locations for 2 cards. The time setting seems well suited to illustrating the turbulence of human experience. The images are richly coloured and drawn graphic novel style which gives a great sense of action and movement. Indeed the guide book gives a suggested spread to be read like a graphic novel.

In practice

I found the suit of cups to stay closest to my understanding whereas the suit of swords, challenging at the best of times, is even more troublesome than usual. This is not a sunny optimistic deck. But I stand by my assertion that trying a new deck brings depth and breadth to your understanding and can tease out a more nuanced reading.

Pros and Cons

If you are ready for a good dose of realism and or need to bring yourself back down to earth then this deck could do that with a bump. For beginners it might put you off altogether!

If you interested in this turbulent time in history then this is a fascinating deck with references to real life historical figures who have in some way influenced English magical tradition.

Andy Letcher gives his interpretation for each of the cards but encourages you to discover your own meaning over time and usage. There is also a hidden mystery running through the entire deck for anyone who would study. An educational treasure hunt if you will!
